The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) has been recognized as one of five United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) Pioneers in the UAE for its contribution to ‘People Development’.

The award was received on November 26, 2017 by Hussain Abdulla Madhi, ENEC Director of Corporate Health, Safety, Environment and Sustainability (Corporate HSE&S), and Abdullah Al Zaabi and David Sutch from the Health, Safety and Environment Office with the Chief Project Office (CPO-HSE).

The recognition as an SDG Pioneer is based on the outstanding work achieved in establishing the Women in Nuclear (WiN) UAE Chapter, as well as the development of the Energy Pioneers Program. These initiatives contributed to the success and recognition as they checked the following SDGs:

  • SDG 5 - Gender equality
  • SDG 4 - Quality education
  • SDG 8 - Decent work and economic growth
  • SDG 9 - Industry, innovation and infrastructure

The United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) is considered the world's largest corporate sustainability initiative responsible for encouraging and recognizing companies around the world contributing to the achievement of the SDGs. The UN Global SDGs were adopted by all 193 Member States of the United Nations in 2015, and set out ambitious targets such as ending extreme poverty, tackling inequality and protecting our planet. The 17 SDGs set a clear framework for governments, business, civil society and citizens to follow and contribute to until 2030.
