Construction Program

The barakah Plant has been most ambitious and strategic projects in the country to date.

ENEC successfully developed the Barakah Plant in accordance with local regulatory requirements and the highest international standards of quality and safety. The UAE Program benefited from exceptional levels of international nuclear industry collaboration, which has been an important addition to the UAE’s expertise in the nuclear energy industry.

Construction of the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant began in July 2012, following the receipt of the Construction License from the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) and a No Objection Certificate from Abu Dhabi’s environmental regulator, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD). In 2013, Construction of Unit 2 commenced. In 2014 and 2015, the first safety concrete was poured for Units 3 and 4 respectively.

In 2015, with the start of construction of Unit 4, the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant became the world’s largest nuclear energy construction site with four identical reactors being safely constructed simultaneously on one site.

In March 2018, the construction of Unit 1 was completed, and the unit was handed over for operational readiness preparations required to get the Operating License by the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR).

In July 2020, ENEC has successfully completed the construction of Unit 2 of the Barakah Plant and handed it over for operational readiness activities.

In November 2021, the construction of Unit 3 of the Barakah Plant was completed, while the construction of Unit 4 was completed in December 2023.
