About Nawah Energy Company


Nawah Energy Company is one of the latest nuclear energy plant operators in the global nuclear industry. Formally established by the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) in 2016 and mandated to operate and maintain the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant. Nawah is a multicultural, Emirati-led company. It aims to become a globally-recognized nuclear energy utility and a UAE employer of choice.

Nawah was established as a subsidiary of ENEC in 2016, as a result of the Joint Venture Agreement between ENEC and the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO). It is a Private Joint Stock Company (PJSC) with 18% owned by KEPCO and 82% owned by ENEC.

Nawah’s focus is on nuclear energy plant operations and it works to safely and reliably generate electricity from nuclear energy to advance the UAE’s growth, development and quality of life for generations to come.

Nawah is responsible for:

  • Operation and maintenance of the Barakah nuclear energy plant, as holder of the Operating License from the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR).
  • Overseeing the work of contractors and support organizations in the operation and maintenance processes of the program.
  • Building and maintaining a high level of nuclear energy plant expertise.
  • Working closely with ENEC and local stakeholders to maintain the alignment of the UAE Peaceful Nuclear Energy Program with the industrial infrastructure plans of the nation.
  • Working to develop a highly skilled Emirati workforce for the nuclear energy program in conjunction with the UAE education sector.
  • Supporting ENEC in the development of a local nuclear supply chain.

Since its establishment, Nawah has made safety its overriding priority. The most important aspect of nuclear energy plant operations is to ensure the safety of the community, the employees and the environment. Every employee is responsible for safety, and is empowered to act accordingly.

Nawah benefits greatly from international expertise, especially from our Korean partners who have more than 40 years of experience in nuclear energy plant operations and maintenance.

The global nuclear community also supports the development and implementation of a world-class nuclear safety culture, policies and procedures at every nuclear utility around the world. Regular safety and quality audits are a core part of the program to ensure continuous improvement in all areas of management and operation.

As the nuclear operations licensee, Nawah ensures it meets all of its regulatory obligations to FANR, as well as the international standards and best practices of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO).
