165 Top Emirati Students Accepted into Nuclear Energy Scholarship Programs; High performing scholarship students recognized for outstanding achievements

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, January 29, 2012 – The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) recently officially welcomed 98 new Emirati students into its range of nuclear energy scholarship programs for the new academic year. The talented students will undertake specialist educational programs at leading educational institutions to equip them for a career in the UAE’s growing nuclear energy industry.

At its annual student gathering, ENEC also celebrated the achievements of the top performing students who are already enrolled in the scholarship programs. Special recognition was given to 15 students who have demonstrated exceptional academic performance over the past year.

“Nuclear energy will play a critical role in UAE’s future energy mix, so investing in our top Emirati talent and developing them as future leaders of the industry is essential to the sustainability of the program,” said Mohamed Al Hammadi, Chief Executive Officer of ENEC.

“We are developing a world-class, high-tech civil nuclear energy program in the UAE; this provides significant opportunity for talented Emiratis to join an exciting, rewarding and challenging career that offers a lifetime of education and development. We welcome our new students and congratulate our existing students on their outstanding performance and dedication to their studies,” added Mr Al Hammadi.

The new students were selected from thousands of applications from across the UAE following an extensive selection process. The 107 selected Emiratis have been awarded full scholarships with benefits in a range of programs.

Of the 165 scholarships, 65 places were offered in the 2012 UAE Nuclear Energy Scholarships Program, with 61 students entering the Bachelors Program, and four students entering the Masters Program. These new students joined the 67 students currently sponsored under the UAE Nuclear Energy Scholarships Program. The program is a joint initiative between ENEC, the Khalifa University of Science and Technology, and the Federal Authority of Nuclear Regulation.  An additional 33 students entered into the Higher Diploma of Nuclear Technology Program at the Abu Dhabi Polytechnic.

“We offer a wide range of scholarship courses and training programs for students and professionals who are interested in the nuclear energy industry,” said Azzah Al Sharhan, HR Director at ENEC. “Our students benefit from internationally recognized qualifications from top universities in fields that best suit their interests and strengths.”

The Bachelors Program prepares students to enter the nuclear energy industry as a qualified engineer, fully trained and ready to address the nation’s growing energy demands. The Masters Program allows engineering and physics graduates to progress their training with an advanced degree. Locally, ENEC partners with Khalifa University on both programs. Internationally, ENEC aligns with some of the world’s leading universities and institutions including the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Georgia Institute of Technology, North Carolina State University, Pennsylvania State University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

In partnership with the Abu Dhabi Polytechnic, the Higher Diploma in Nuclear Technology scholarship combines course work with specialized technical programs to prepare students to operate the UAE’s nuclear reactors. Students will graduate from the three-year program with the specialized Diploma, as well as job qualification certificates in operating, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and control, chemical, and radiation protection specializations.

ENEC will be participating in this year’s edition of Tawdheef, the leading recruitment exhibition in Abu Dhabi which will take place on 31 January 2012 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center (ADNEC). The corporate recruitment and scholarship stand can be found Hall 5, stand number 5A20 next to the main entry.
