Progress Update on Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant

Following an extensive evaluation process, the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) signed the Prime Contract with Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) in 2009, based on the quality and safety standards of the APR1400 technology, and the proven ability of KEPCO and KHNP’s through their 40 years of operating expertise. ENEC continues to have full confidence in the APR1400 technology. This technology achieves the highest international standards of quality, safety and performance.

Work continues at the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant to bring Unit 1 into operation in alignment with these standards and requirements. ENEC is learning from the experiences at Shin Kori Units 3 and 4, including those related to the Pilot Operated Safety Relief Valves (POSRVs). Work continues to ensure that the POSRVs for the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant meet ENEC’s quality, safety and security standards, as well as the national regulations of the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR). ENEC is working closely with  KEPCO and its operational subsidiary Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power (KHNP).

Working with its Korean partners, FANR and other international experts, ENEC is committed to delivering the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, the first of its kind in the Arab world, to the highest standards of quality and safety.

As of January 2019, construction completion progress across the four units stands at 91%.
