Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant to Increase Sustainability of UAE

26.07.17

As part of its commitment to sustainability, the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) continues to track its environmental protection record and forecast future benefits for the society and economy of the UAE.

Once operational, a nuclear energy plant does not produce any greenhouse gas emissions and is therefore internationally recognized as a clean source of energy. Any emissions related to this sustainable and reliable technology are accounted for during the construction period and as part of the manufacturing of nuclear fuel assemblies.

In alignment with internationally accepted statistics, once fully operational, the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant will prevent the release into the atmosphere of more than 21 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions every year.

The new projections have emerged as a result of using data from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fifth Assessment Report on greenhouse gas emissions from energy sources, and newly available projections for the operational parameters of the nuclear energy reactors at Barakah.

The Barakah project will deliver clean, efficient and reliable nuclear energy to the UAE grid and form an integral part of the nation’s commitment to cut the carbon footprint of electricity generation.
